Scaling and Root Planing Post Op Instructions
Post Operative Instructions for Periodontal Therapy
1. Rinse with warm salt water on the day of and the day after therapy. Make salt water by adding 1/4 teaspoon of salt to 1 cup of warm water. Swish the warm salt water gently in your mouth and expectorate. You may repeat use of this rinse several times to soothe any post treatment discomfort.
2. If you received local anesthesia, the numbness may last 1-2 hours on the upper teeth and 2-3 hours on the lower. Take caution not to bite your cheek or lips.
3. You may need to take an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen (Advil) to help relieve any mild discomfort. For an adult, 400-600 mg of ibuprofen every 6 hours for 24-48 hours post treatment is recommended.
4. In areas where a large amount of inflammation was present, bleeding may continue after treatment. Use a moist tea bag and apply pressure to the gums.
